Julia Yu-Ching Tsao

Connected intelligence, sensory augmentation, and emerging models of distributed computation.

An interaction designer by trade, a broad range of diverse clients and collaborators include design consultancy IDEO, intent data exchange Bluekai (Oracle), global advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy, street culture lifestyle brand Undefeated Inc., LRNG, a MacArthur Foundation research initiative examining social and recreational practices surrounding new media and digital technologies in bridging the equity gap in education, and the iconic video game company Atari‘s focus on video game history preservation.

Julia holds a BA in History from UCLA and an MFA in Media Design from Art Center College of Design. With a focus on the implications of an increasingly connected world, her graduate thesis on augmented reality, ubiquitous computing, and artificial intelligence "Curious Displays" has been referenced in research initiatives from Disney Research, Microsoft, and Carneige Mellon University. Her independent project, “S-T,” in collaboration with the actor Jeff Goldblum, an exploratory design research effort examining the role of new media technology, digital culture, and creativity in STEM, was featured in 2014 Apple commercial “Stickers”—an interest area she has continued to cultivate in personal and professional projects, recently in collaboration with the team at Stanford Healthcare.

Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Julia grew up between Shanghai and Southern California and currently resides in Los Angeles.
